Ricky's early life had a heavy impact on who he became later in life. His father and mother were loving and supportive. They embraced his love of westerns and frontier life. Later in life, Ricky would say that he was Wyatt Earp reborn. He was also a huge fan of Andy Griffith, something that he would watch with fondness until his final days. His knowledge and passion for serving Rockdale County would be molded by his parents, with JB serving as Tax Commissioner from 1956 to 1972, and Myrtle taking up the torch afterwards and holding the office until she retired in 1980.After graduating from Rockdale County High School, Ricky worked for Ace Hardware. On the side, he volunteered with the Sheriff's Posse starting in 1976. The same year that he began to volunteer with the Sheriff's Office, his first daughter Nicole Marie Edge (Baker) was born. In 1980 Sheriff Wallace asked Ricky to join the Sheriff's Office full time, and that is where his story truly began.
Ricky took to the work of a deputy sheriff as if he had been born for the role. He would often say later in life that he was made for that line of work. His early career would be marked by the birth of his son, Richard Coty Edge in 1983 and his second daughter, Jacalyn Carly Edge (Webb) in 1986. The adventure of his early years as a deputy would become stories and life lessons, he would tell his fellow deputies and family, even if the stories were a little embellished.
His rise through the ranks of the Sheriff's Office took him through every division. He worked the road as a deputy and Sergeant. When he was promoted to Lieutenant, he took over as quartermaster for the RCSO. As a Captain, he led Warrants and Civil, and was the Jail Commander . His love, however, was for the road, and he would return to being a Lieutenant so he could patrol the streets of Rockdale one last time. Many deputies will comment on the impact that Ricky had on their lives. He was a mentor to all. His experiences and knowledge were a bedrock from which others could propel their own careers. All of this, his mentorship, and care he had for his subordinates, was born of his love for his own family.
