Josephine Hamm's Obituary
Josephine Hamm, lifelong Rockdale County resident, accepted God's call to come home on October 1, 2024. At age 90, she transitioned to her new life peacefully from her earthly residence. Josephine made history in the 1970's by becoming the first Black vice president at the Main Street School in the Rockdale County School System and then becoming the first Black president.
Her notable professional accomplishments included being a former educator, businesswoman, homemaker, and church fixture. She was a beloved kindergarten teacher, providing the firm foundation for a multitude of successful students. She also was owner and operator of Hamm Auto, a thriving automotive enterprise in partnership with her husband, Raleigh, who preceded her in death.
Known as "Mrs. Josephine" by most and "Mom", "Mother" or "Aunt Jo" by many, she dedicated her life principally to serving the Lord by serving others and mothering those who needed or wanted it. So, her role as a member of White's Chapel UMC and a member of the Mother Board at Peek's Chapel Baptist Church was quite fitting.
Apart from her life of dedicated church service, Mrs. Josephine personally enjoyed decorating, party planning, being a fashionista and having a good long telephone conversation with friends.
Josephine also was preceded in death by her daughter Cassandra. She is survived by her children: Ray Dean Hamm; Cynthia Turner (Donald); Hosea Hamm; Attorney Sherry Hamm; and Nikki Hamm. Grandchildren: Desha Smith (Greg); Lisa Hall (Nathan); Quinton Turner; Cailen Hamm; Chloe Hamm and Jacquelin Noel-Hamm. Great grandchildren: Halsten Smith; Paloma Hall; Orly Hall and Miri Hall. Nieces and Nephews.
Mrs. Josephine will be laid to rest October 5, 2024, at 11:00am just steps away from where her mother went into labor in preparation for her birth -- Peek's Chapel Baptist Church, Conyers, GA.
