Gwendolyn Carol Mathis' Obituary
In God's infinite wisdom, the fifteenth day May 1951, He chose Carolyn Yates to bring forth a humble vessel and named her Gwendolyn Carol Boyd. she was born in Louisville, KY. Gwen matriculated her education studies with Jefferson County School System where she attended and graduated from Central High School in 1969 and 2 years of Jefferson Community College. she was loved by everyone she met. She was a woman of many words. She loved animals, especially dogs. Her hobbies were crafting and quilting. She was also a jokester who enjoy telling jokes, "keeping it real" as she would say. She belong to a sewing/crafting guild. Anytime you would come to her house you would never leave there hungry, because she loved to cook. She learned to juggle her schedule around her children and grandchildren so she could be the best mom/grandmother ever, During family time she would never miss an opportunity to take pictures to catch those special moments. She was always going to doctor's appointments, attending school activities and still holding down a household while she worked. She was a person that loved people. Her caring personality allowed her to hold down several jobs such as front end supervisor at Kroger, school bus driver, Bridgestone Sports Company, Yellow Book Company and also a Kindergarten teacher. Gwen was a dedicated hard working mom who embodied the characteristics of a Vigorous woman. On Monday, April 24, 2017 Gwen peacefully begun her transition. Gwen was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Carolyn Yates, James Harris(Father), Leroy Mathis Sr. (father in law) and Leona Mathis(Mother-in-law). Her legacy of dignity, love and great strength will forever be cherished by her devoted husband of 46 years. LeRoy Mathis Jr.; one son, LeRoi D. Mathis (Roberta); two daughters, Melissa M. Aiken(Tony) and Kimberly M. Calbert(Dwight); Five grandchildren, Ashley L. Mathis, Alisha N. Calbert, Jasmine A. Calbert, Dwight E. Calbert Jr., Antonio G. Aiken Jr.; Two step grandchildren Demetrius M. Lowe, Bonnie E. Turner, Two step great grandchildren, Bralyn Turner and Brendyn Turner. A host of other aunts, uncles, cousin, nieces, nephews, and friends whose life has been indelibly touch by her life.
