Elvie G McCollum's Obituary
Reflection Elvie Giles McCollum was born on March 31, 1939 in Rockdale County, Georgia to the late L.B. and Elizabeth Giles and was the fourth of seven children. She was preceded in death by her sister, Geneva Giles Guthrie in 2013. Elvie attended elementary and high school at Bryant Street School and graduated in 1957. After high school, she began a career at Dekalb General Hospital working in the Dietary Services Department. After a long courtship, she was united in Holy Matrimony to Ernest McCollum and became a homemaker. Through this union was born one son, Joel. Her family became her priority, as she loved cooking and baking cakes and her Famous Homemade Banana Pudding. Her banana pudding was enjoyed by many and highly requested; it was always the highlight of many occasions and events. For many years, she enjoyed sewing and making clothes for others. Elvie enjoyed working outside caring for her flowers and lawn, canning fruits and vegetables and being an all around homemaker. She was a wonderful wife, loving mother, sister, grandmother and friend. Elvie joined Pleasant Hill CME Church at a very young age. She became a dedicated, loyal and faithful servant for over 50 years. She loved God and His Church. She served on the Stewardess Board for 40 years. The Ministry of Stewardess is special, and it was special to her. Not only did she serve as a Mother of the Church, she also prepared the Table and the Sanctuary for Holy Communion. She was a member of the Women Missionary Society, a class leader and served God's Church in other capacities as needed or assigned. She was very particular when decorating the tables in the Fellowship Hall, making her own centerpieces for various occasions. She always loved working behind the scenes and making sure that things were done her precise way. Elvie was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest McCollum in 1989. She leaves to cherish her wonderful memories: one son, Joel McCollum; two grandchildren Christopher McCollum and Caroline McCollum; four brothers: Mr. Walter (Clara) Giles, Mr. A.G. Giles, Mr. Oscar (Patricia) Giles and Mr. Anvil (Dorothy) Giles; one loving and devoted sister, Mrs. Violet (Preston) Bailey; brother-in-law, Mr. Lamar Guthrie; The McCollum Family; nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of relatives and friends.
