Clarence Flanigan Jr.'s Obituary
Dr. Clarence Flanigan, Jr., 79, son of the late Clarence Flanigan, Sr. and Etta Sue Foster Flanigan, was born on February 19, 1944, in Conyers, Georgia. He departed this life to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, February 19, 2023, in Augusta, Georgia.
Clarence graduated from John Phillip Carr High School in 1961 as the class president and valedictorian. He then attended Clark College in Atlanta, Georgia, where he majored in Biology. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from Clark College in 1965, he attended the State University of New York at Stony Brook and pursued a Master's degree in microbiology, which he completed in the spring of 1967.
Clarence worked at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia as a Biochemist from April 1967 until he entered medical school at the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) in the fall of 1971. He graduated from MCG in June 1975. Following his internship and residency in the area of Pediatrics at MCG, he entered the Commission Corp., a branch of the US Navy, until July 1979.
Clarence entered private practice in Aiken, South Carolina in July 1979, and continued there until 1998. He spent approximately twenty (20) years in Primary Care. He began the certification process in the field of Emergency Medicine in 1988 on a part-time basis, and later became full-time in April 1998. Dr. Flanigan practiced Emergency Medicine in the eastern parts of Georgia and various parts of South Carolina, as well as Hobbs, New Mexico. He ultimately retired from the practice of medicine in 2019. Above all, Clarence wanted to be known as a doctor who tirelessly served his community. His colleagues, the nurses, and his patients knew him as kind, caring, and compassionate.
Clarence accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and became a baptized member of Peeks Chapel Baptist Church at a young age. He was later ordained as a Deacon at the church. He later joined Rocksville Baptist Church, in Warrenville, South Carolina, where he also served as a Deacon.
In his leisure, Clarence was a loyal Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Falcons fan, a love passed down from his father, Clarence, Sr., and he enjoyed attending the games. He was also a history buff and liked watching the news. Clarence was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and a former member of the Royal Aikenites.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Harold Flanigan and Shasta Flanigan-Franklin, and his sister-in-law, Veronica Flanigan.
Clarence leaves to cherish his memories: four loving daughters, Sonya Flanigan of Hiram, GA, Kelli Flanigan of Conyers, GA, Dr. Nadia Flanigan of Port Orange, FL, and Nikki Flanigan, Esq. of Lawrenceville, GA; grandchildren, Maurice Upchurch of Hiram, GA, Savannah and Skylar Moore, both of Lawrenceville, GA, and Myles Flanigan of Conyers, GA; one brother, Captain Calvin Flanigan of Conyers, GA; two aunts, Sarah McCollum (Bobby) of Decatur, GA, and Annie Benton of Conyers, GA; an uncle, Robert Flanigan of Conyers, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and colleagues.
