Bennet Smith's Obituary
Bennett Smith was born August 9, 1942 to Hattie Brown Smith and Herbet Smith in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. He later moved to Brooklyn, New York where he spent most of his life. In his early adulthood, he worked for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York City. Later in life he became an entrepreneur and owned his own business until retiring in 2009. In 1968, Bennett married Johnnie Lee Dardy and they remained married for 54 years until his death. To this union was born one daughter Tawanna who is the mother of Janelle and Andrew Fenty, Jr. Upon retiring, he relocated to Conyers, Georgia. Where he remained until his death.
Bennett enjoyed bike riding, karate, and watching old movies (western's & civil war) from the 1940s and 1950s. He also enjoyed watching sports and was an avid chess player. He loved dogs and considered 'his first canine pet "Wolf" as family. Bennett was always the life of the party and enjoyed gatherings with family and friends.
In the year 2019, Bennett gave his life to the Lord and became a born again Christian. On July 18, 2022, Bennett departed life in Covington, Georgia leaving behind his wife of 54 years, Johnnie Smith, 10 children (Tawanna Smith-Fenty, Kim Haynes, Bennett Smith, Craig Smith, Michelle Ogunsanya, Christine Smith, Elizabeth Smith, Blane Smith(preceded), Jennifer Smith, Hedda Kitchens; 49 grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was 1 of 7 children and is survived by two siblings, one brother (Jimmy) and one sister (Mary).
