Barrington Oliver Shirley's Obituary
Barrington Oliver Shirley passed away at age 76 on October 2nd, 2022, in Georgia and was loved by his family near and far. Barrington was born September 23rd,1946, in St. Ann's Bay, Jamaica and was preceded by his parents Stanley Oliver and Beryl Eulalee Shirley. Barrington Oliver Shirley is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Audrey Yvette Angela Shirley, his two daughters, Reneè Alicia Shirley and Monique Felicia Shirley (Jonathon Alcantara), and his grandchildren, Tyler Martinez, and Daniel Alcantara.
As the eldest of eight, Barrington is loved and honored by his seven siblings and their spouses in Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, and Canada. His large and loving family consists of Beverly (Richard) Collins, Stanley Shirley Junior (Brenda), Maureen (Fitzroy) Graham, Donald (Andrena) Shirley, Winston Shirley, Olga Shirley-Barnett, and Wayne (Wendy) Shirley. He is also survived by thirteen nieces and nephews: Jason (Simirat) Graham, Nadine (Marvin) Afyre, Keisha Collins (Al Mamah), Kurt Collins, Dr. Adrian (Jillian) Abrahams, Stanley (Erica) Shirley, Michael Abrahams Junior, Christina Shirley, Amelia Ann Barnett, Christopher Shirley, Luisa Abrahams,Lina Abrahams, Ariadne Shirley and six grandnieces and nephews. Barrington will be missed by his mother-in-law, Gloria Cruise, sister and brother-in-law, Dr. Michael and Jeanette Abrahams, and sister-in-law Carlene Abrahams. He also left a host of extended family and friends.
After marrying the love of his life Audrey Yvette Angela Cruise on January 3rd, 1970,in Kingston, Jamaica, they moved to New York where he worked in accounting at ABC News. In 1980, they moved to Decatur, Georgia where he began working at TBS/CNN until his retirement in 2017. After his retirement from CNN, Barrington spent his time growing his own vegetables, working on home projects, and sharing his love of history and geography with his grandson and best friend, Tyler. Barrington was an avid sports fan, as he was a former track and field athlete at Munro College in Jamaica, and passed this love onto his children by taking them to various sporting events and activities. He was also an amateur photographer and the family chef and baker who loved preparing food for family events and holidays. Barrington was selfless, kind, considerate, and a joy in everyone's lives. A devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend, Barrington Oliver Shirley will be sorely missed.
